A boiler is the centre of a larger hydronic system. Replacing the appliance without understanding the radiators, zones, pumps, controls, piping, and domestic hot-water load can leave the same comfort problems behind. We start with the building and the system, then select the boiler.

Repair before replacement

A leaking valve, failed circulator, control fault, or neglected maintenance does not automatically mean the boiler is finished. If the equipment has useful life left, our first recommendation is a repair. See our boiler repair and radiator service for common hydronic problems.

Replacement becomes worth discussing when reliability is declining, important parts are unavailable, the heat exchanger or venting has a serious problem, or the cost of continued repairs no longer makes sense. We explain that comparison before quoting new equipment.

Sizing for the home and its radiation

Boiler size should follow the home's heating load and the output of its radiators or in-floor zones—not simply the rating plate on the old appliance. Oversizing can cause short cycles, unnecessary wear, and poor efficiency. Undersizing can leave the building short of heat on the coldest days.

We review the building, the number and type of emitters, operating temperatures, zone layout, and any planned renovations. Older cast-iron radiators can be an asset because their surface area may allow comfortable operation at lower water temperatures.

Conventional boiler or combi boiler?

A heating-only boiler works with a separate domestic hot-water system. A combi boiler provides space heating and domestic hot water from one wall-mounted appliance. Combi systems can free floor space and reduce the number of appliances in the mechanical room, but they must be selected for both heating load and peak hot-water demand.

We install Navien as our primary combi-boiler line. A combi is not automatically right for every family or every piping layout; gas capacity, vent routing, water demand, and service access all matter.

Installation details that affect reliability

• Gas supply and combustion-air requirements.
• Approved venting location, clearances, and condensate drainage.
• System pumps, expansion tank, air removal, and pressure control.
• Zone valves, thermostats, outdoor reset, and control strategy.
• Water quality, system flushing, and protection of the new heat exchanger.
• Isolation and service access for future maintenance.

Keep the radiators when they still make sense

Many west-Toronto homes have durable cast-iron radiation that is worth keeping. A boiler replacement does not require converting the house to forced air. We check radiator condition, valves, balancing, piping, and system pressure so the new boiler works with the parts of the home that already provide comfortable heat.
