What Usually Goes Wrong

Furnaces rarely die without warning. They fail in patterns, and after enough winters in this city you learn them:

• Furnace runs, then shuts off after a few minutes: can indicate flame-sensing, airflow, or safety-limit trouble. The furnace may shut down because its controls cannot confirm safe operation, so the cause needs to be tested rather than guessed.
• Blowing cold air: the blower is running but the burners are not firing — a pressure switch, a blocked intake or exhaust vent, or a tripped limit switch.
• Short cycling: turning on and off every few minutes. Often a clogged filter or a restricted return starving the furnace of airflow, sometimes an oversized system.
• Water pooling around the base: a blocked condensate drain or trap on a high-efficiency unit. Left alone it backs up into the pressure switch and shuts the furnace down.
• Loud grinding, squealing, or rattling: blower motor bearings or an unbalanced wheel. Worth catching before the motor seizes.
• No response at all: thermostat, control board, or a tripped breaker. We check the cheap causes first.
