A replacement is more than swapping a box. We size the system to your house, check that the ductwork can actually carry the air, and do the venting and gas work properly.
Replacing a furnace should involve more than matching the old unit's capacity and connecting a new box. If the original system was oversized or the return air was restricted, a like-for-like replacement can carry the same comfort problems forward.
Replace Only When It Is Honest
We are repair-first, and that applies here more than anywhere. If your furnace has clear life left in it, you should not be buying a new one. See furnace repair for what we can usually fix in a single visit.
The cases where replacement genuinely wins: a cracked heat exchanger, which is a safety issue and not negotiable; a unit past fifteen years facing its second major part; or a repair bill approaching a meaningful share of a new system. When one of those is true we will say so plainly, price it, and let you decide without pressure on the same visit.
Sizing the System to the House
Bigger is not better. An oversized furnace short cycles: it satisfies the thermostat fast, shuts off, and starts again minutes later. That means uneven temperatures between rooms, more wear on the ignition components, and worse efficiency than the sticker promises. It is one of the most common problems we find in Toronto homes, and it is almost always the result of matching the new unit to the old one instead of to the building.
We size on a heat-load basis: square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling heights, and how the house actually gets used.
The Part Most Quotes Leave Out
A furnace is only as good as the ductwork attached to it. Plenty of Toronto houses, especially ones that have been renovated or had a basement finished, have return air that cannot feed the system they already own. Bolting a bigger furnace onto a starved return makes it worse, not better.
- Return air capacity: we check the system can actually breathe before we quote a size.
- Venting: high-efficiency units vent through the side wall, not the chimney. That routing has to be right, and it has to be legal.
- Condensate: high-efficiency furnaces produce water. It needs a proper drain and trap, or it backs up into the pressure switch and shuts the unit down.
- Gas line: sized for the new appliance and for everything else on the line.
