One system can heat and cool your home, but only when it is sized and installed for the building it serves.
A heat pump is not one standard box for every house. Toronto homes range from narrow brick semis with radiators to newer detached houses with forced-air ductwork. The right system depends on the building's heat loss, electrical capacity, existing heating equipment, available outdoor space, and the rooms that need better comfort.
Ducted or ductless?
A ducted heat pump connects to suitable existing ductwork and can serve the whole house through the existing supply and return system. Before recommending one, we check whether the ducts can move the required air and whether room-to-room comfort problems need to be corrected.
A ductless mini-split is often the cleaner answer for homes with boilers and radiators, finished additions, upper floors that never cool properly, and houses where adding ducts would mean opening walls. Planning for Toronto winters
Heating performance changes as outdoor temperatures fall, so a heat-pump quote should explain more than the nameplate capacity. We look at the home's heating load, the selected unit's cold-weather output, defrost operation, and how backup heat will work on the coldest days. Depending on the house, backup may come from electric heat or an existing furnace or boiler.
That planning prevents two common mistakes: installing a unit that cannot carry the intended load, or paying for more equipment than the house needs. We explain what the heat pump is expected to cover and what existing equipment, if any, should remain.
What a proper installation includes
- Heat-loss and room-by-room comfort assessment.

- Outdoor-unit placement for airflow, drainage, snow, and service access.

Heat pump repair
If an existing heat pump is not keeping up, runs constantly, ices excessively, leaks water, or displays an error code, the cause needs to be tested before parts are changed. We check airflow, filters and coils, drainage, controls, sensors, electrical components, refrigerant-side symptoms, and the outdoor unit's operation. The goal is a clear repair recommendation, not a guess.
When another heating system makes more sense
Heat pumps are useful, but they are not automatically the best answer for every building. A home with a healthy furnace and good ductwork may be better served by repairing the existing system. Can a heat pump heat a Toronto home in winter?
Cold-climate heat pumps are designed to operate below freezing, but the right design depends on the house, heat loss, equipment performance, and backup-heat plan. We assess those factors before recommending a system.
Do I need ductwork for a heat pump?
No. A ducted heat pump can use suitable existing ductwork, while a ductless mini-split uses indoor wall-mounted units and refrigerant lines instead of ducts.
Do you repair heat pumps as well as install them?
Yes. We diagnose ducted and ductless heat-pump problems including poor heating or cooling, icing, drainage issues, controls, airflow, and outdoor-unit faults.
