HVAC Controls

Thermostat installation and repair in Toronto.

Make sure the thermostat, wiring, and equipment controls work together before replacing the device on the wall.

A thermostat is the part of the HVAC system you touch, but it is only one part of the control circuit. A blank screen, short cycling, incorrect temperature, or equipment that does not respond may come from the thermostat, wiring, power, a safety switch, controls, or the heating and cooling equipment itself. We test the call from the wall through to the system before deciding what needs replacement.

Thermostat Problems We Diagnose

  • Blank display, lost power, or intermittent operation.
  • Heating or cooling that does not start, stop, or reach setpoint.
  • Short cycling, incorrect mode, or fan-control problems.
  • Temperature readings that do not match the occupied space.
  • Wiring and compatibility issues after a thermostat change.
  • Zone, relay, accessory, or equipment-control faults.

Check Compatibility Before Installation

Thermostats differ in the equipment and wiring they support. The system may have one or more heating and cooling stages, a heat pump, auxiliary heat, humidification, ventilation, hydronic zones, or proprietary controls. Available wires and common power also affect the installation.

We identify the connected equipment and control requirements before changing the thermostat. That prevents a device from being chosen for its app or appearance when it cannot operate the system properly.

Smart and Programmable Thermostats

A programmable or connected thermostat can make schedules and temperature changes easier, but the useful features depend on the household and equipment. We can install compatible equipment, configure the basic heating and cooling operation, and explain the settings that affect comfort and system behaviour.

Furnaces, AC, Heat Pumps, and Boilers

We work with controls connected to forced-air furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, and hydronic heating. If testing shows the thermostat is working and the fault is in the equipment, we can move the service call to the relevant furnace, air-conditioning, heat-pump, or boiler diagnosis without pretending the wall control was the problem.

Thermostat service questions

Can any smart thermostat work with my HVAC system?

No. Compatibility depends on the heating and cooling equipment, stages, wiring, available common power, accessories, and control design. We check the system before recommending or installing a thermostat.

Why is my thermostat blank or not turning the system on?

The cause may be at the thermostat, wiring, power supply, safety circuit, furnace or air handler, condensate switch, controls, or the HVAC equipment itself. Testing the complete call for heating or cooling avoids replacing a thermostat that is not the fault.

Can you install a thermostat I already purchased?

Often, if it is compatible with the system and installation requirements. We still inspect the wiring, controls, and connected equipment before installing customer-supplied hardware.

Do boiler systems use thermostats?

Yes. Boilers can use thermostats with zone valves, relays, pumps, or other hydronic controls. The thermostat has to be matched to the control circuit and the way the heating zones operate.
